IN THE MOOD FOR CHINA

Rock en Seine, samedi soir: 2 mois avant mon départ. Julien m'a dit quelque chose de juste qui pourrait résumer la réponse que j'ai apporté à toutes les questions que je me suis posée quant à cette grande décision:

Julien a dit: " C'est plus risqué de ne pas y aller que d'y aller".

I and some friends were at a concert, Saturday night: One of them, said something about Beidjing that could sum up my  thoughts over the last weeks: Julien said: " it is more risky not to go than to go." O my god, this guy is so true ( hopefully...)

Vendredi 24 août: j'ai pris ma décision! Je pars en Chine pour 12 mois: je me vois offrir un contrat de " French polisher",  à savoir traductrice/correctrice/relectrice à l'agence de presse chinoise Xinhua à partir de la fin Octobre prochain. Anders me rejoint à partir du mois de février! La Norvège et la France en Chine, ça va être... hum... marrant!

Pour le pitch:

- je ne parle pas un mot de Chinois
- je n'ai jamais mis un pied en Asie
- ça fait quelques mois que je n'ai rien écrit, ( hormis les tests passés à l'agence...)

Foire aux questions:

- Comment j'ai eu le poste?

Blanche, ma super cops traductrice, fait un stage à l'agence Xinhua dans les bureaux à Paris: un soir de match de quart de coupe du monde rue des Petites Ecuries vers 2h du matin ( :), Blanche m'annonce au hasard d'une conversation qu'un poste de traducteur/correcteur serait disponible à Pékin... Après quelques minutes, l'idée chemine dans ma tête: et pourquoi pas moi?

La machine se met en marche, je passe tests, entretiens, sans vraiment y croire ni y réfléchir. La nouvelle tombe quelques semaines plus tard: je suis retenue pour le poste. Li Wei, la personne chargée des étrangers chez Xinhua m'a envoyé tous les documents ( contrat, assurance médicale, vaccins nécessaires etc.) Il est désormais temps de prendre une décision.

Après le calme, la tempête: je suis restée sereine quelques temps: je réfléchissais sans vraiment réaliser... Puis j'ai commencé à en parler autour de moi, en prenant conscience que ce projet pourrait être envisageable voire réalisable! Oui je pourrai vivre 12 mois à Pékin ( exotique!) en agence de presse ( mon rêve!), voyager un peu, en profiter beaucoup, rencontrer des gens, découvrir l'Asie...
Puis vient la tempête: j'envoie un million d'emails à chaque contact, connaissance, potes pour sonder la vie sur place: rationnellement le choix est compliqué... Mais une petite voix me dit: Ac, faut y aller... Peur d'affronter le marché du travail en France? ( Non je m'en fous) Peur d'affronter mes réalités en france? Non, je suis parée, je sais où je vais ( euh en france lol)

- J'y vais ou j'y vais pas?

Alors, j'y vais ou j'y vais pas? J'Y VAIS! PAs sans ANders qui me rejoindra en Février ( c'était ma dernière question... 120 jours sans lui ça va être dur...) mais comme il dit, si je suis motivée pour cette opportunité alors ces 120 jours ne doivent pas me faire reculer... ( hésiter ok...)

Beijing me voilà!!!!

J'ai envoyé le contrat ce matin... Une nouvelle aventure commence! Et je m'en vois ravie!

- Quand est ce que je pars?

Mon départ est prévu fin octobre, début novembre prochain.

- Vais-je rentrer en France durant ces 12 mois?

Oui, j'ai 4 semaines de vacances à prendre à partir du 6e mois de travail. Je pense rentrer en France en Juin ( Xinhua ne paie pas le billet d'avion cette fois)

- Que vais-je y faire exactement?

Je vais travailler pour l'agence de presse Xinhua en tant que " French Expert" : traduire, relire, corriger les dépêches déjà traduites par les chinois du chinois au français.

-Et Anders?

Anders me rejoint au mois de février après la fin de ses études en Californie.

- Où vais-je loger?

J'ai commencé à me renseigner sur les conditions de logement à Pékin: on me conseille d'attendre d'être sur place pour chercher. Les loyers des logements pékinois vont de 200à RMB/mois à 50000( de 200 euros à des milliers!)

- Si je connais des gens sur place?

Oui de fil en aiguille je me rends compte que je connais des gens indirectement ou directement sur place.

- SI j'ai un peu peur?!

Oui j'ai super peur!!!! Mais il faut y aller, ça va être génial de voir ce que la Chine nous réserve! (à moi et et au monde...!)


Friday August 24th: I took my decision! A big one! I decided to accept to job offer from Xinhua, the Chinese News press agency to leave to China for 12 months in Beidjing to be accurate...

I will be a " French POlisher"  to be meant: translate, correct, articles from English to French...

I will leave late of October with a 12 months local contract.  Anders, my greatest Norwegian boyfriend ( ;) might - must - join me in February. My sister also lives in China but far away from Beijing!

To pitch the situation in a nutshell:

- I don't speak one single word of Chinese
- None of my foot never steps any piece of Asia Earth
- I have not written anything for some months ( except testes at the agency)

But!

- I already lived abroad for one year ( ok California is much more convenient than Asia!)
- I am willing to learn, to pick, to grap everything!

Emails after Emails, sleepless nights after sleepless night, I contacted half of China ( and people from France who live in CHina, and French people who have been living in CHina and French and people who have been visiting CHina ) it was hard to make up my mind but I decided to go... I don'tknow why ( the job is not well paid, I will miss my boyfriend, my friends, my family) I know it is not gonna be the most comfortable life ever for the Parisian I am but I am excited to go somewhere I have never been, to work for a news press agency, to work as a translator and so on.

- HOw did I get the position?

Blanche, a friend of mine I met in California, is interning in Xinhua in Paris; A night during World Cup in a bar, she talked to me about the opportunity to work in Beijing as a French translator... After a few drinks, I taught: hum... Should I take the opportunity? I took the test and the interview with M. Ding who could hardly speak French... And refused to talk to me in English. The interview was about my fiancé, I showed him where Norway was in Europe. One day, I received an email with the contract attached to the messages... A decision was needed...

- When am I leaving?

I will leave late of October to be able to start asap. I will live in Beijing 12 months.

- Will I be back to France over the next 12 months?

The contract specifies I can take 4  weeks of holidays after 6 months. I might be back to France in June at least 2 weeks.

- What is the job exaclty?

I am a "French Expert" : I don't think I am the best Expert in France but at least I will try: I will work for the chinese newspress agency, the equivalent of Associated Press in China. I will translate, polish, correct the articles from English to French.

-WHat about Anders?

I have 2 months of probation. If I don't like it I am back on January. If I do, Anders joins me as a tourist first and then he will see what he can do... What a nice tolerant boyfriend I have! :)

- Where will I stay?

I have to find my own appartement; I decided I will seek for one once I am there. I love moving in and out around the world with a backpack as my only furniture!

- Do I know people there ?

Emails after Emails I realized Beijing, China and Asia is not such a surprizing place to live ( or to visit...) At least, I already have a place to stay the first days I arrive.

- How do I feel about leaving?

I DO freak out!!!! We will see. I am so excited to discover the place too! I have no idea what to expect... Ah les voyages.....
